How to Pack Properly for a Self-Storage Unit

In each and every one of us there is a little pack rat – whether it is the perfectly good kitchen table from your first apartment, your grandfather’s encyclopedia collection, or your college books and notebooks, such possessions are never easy to let go of. Even though logic dictates that your house would look, feel and function better if you could empty out the garage, basement and the attic, these items hold too much of a sentimental value and you are simply not emotionally ready to let go of them.

Luckily Safe Self Storage affords you the ability to take advantage of temporary or long-term contracts for household, recreational and seasonal storage items. You can put these possessions away until you need them again or when you feel the time is right to give them away.

We have put together a short guideline on how to pack your items for self-storage. Please consider that when you pack and pile your possessions carefully, this will guarantee that you will find them in mint and usable condition when the time to retrieve them arrives.

  • Clearly label boxes, and create aisles with the writing facing out.
  • Group boxes by category: all the winter clothes here, all the boating gear there.
  • Don’t stack boxes too high, and put up shelving for maximum efficiency.
  • Pack books flat to protect the spines.
  • Don’t place boxes on concrete floors; use pallets or skids to prevent moisture absorption.
  • Fill out empty pockets in the boxes with packing material, and don’t overload them.
  • Don’t store candles, perishable foods, fuel, toxic materials, liquids, spray bottles, or aerosol cans.
  • Engines should be drained of gasoline; a refrigerator or freezer should be thoroughly dry, its door left slightly ajar.
  • Wipe metal surfaces with a few drops of machine oil to prevent rust.
  • Protect clothing with garment bags, along with a few moth balls.
  • Curtains and drapes should go on hangers inside wardrobe boxes or be carefully folded in plastic boxes.
  • Heavy linens, delicate Christmas ornaments, and vintage dresses should be wrapped in acid-free tissue and placed in plastic boxes to prevent damage.
